An invitation to move with butterflies.

Voilure is a portable device for interacting with butterflies. It attaches to a stick found during a walk; a silicone lure hangs from a thread and moves with the wind. Inspired by seeing butterflies follow moving lures, we imagined a shared dance: a human gesture and a butterfly’s flight responding to one another.

A device to carry and assemble

The compact attachment can be carried until a stick is found. A silicone fitting grips the stick, while a thread suspends the silicone lure. The stick’s length and stiffness influence how the lure moves. We designed the attachment to be reusable.

Exploring silicone manufacturing

I visited a silicone factory in Shenzhen to explore a potential manufacturing collaboration for Voilure. These samples are from the factory visit.

From wing scales to living movement

Butterflies belong to a group called Lepidoptera, a name that means “scaly wings”. We first arranged silicone pieces into walls or flags to echo the scales on their wings. These experiments could not capture the lightness, translucency and fleeting movement of a butterfly.

Instead of recreating those qualities, we began to work with butterflies themselves. Voilure invites a dialogue shaped by both the person’s gesture and the butterfly’s path.
